With the Autumn 2024 collection, Lanvin further underscores its spirit of le chic ultime and the enduring sophistication of a historic Parisian couture house founded by the visionary Jeanne Lanvin.
In the passing of centuries and cultural epochs, the maison has steadfastly witnessed and participated in the shaping of modern life from its institutional seat in Paris on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Jeanne Lanvin, a luminary of her métier, established the genesis of a modern fashion house, applying her vision across couture, menswear, childrenswear, fragrance, accessories and interiors with the sensibility and instinct of an entrepreneur.
The Autumn 2024 collection takes inspiration from another woman of influence: Nancy Cunard, the English writer, heiress and patron of couturiers and the arts. Though Cunard and Jeanne Lanvin’s relationship was not extensively documented, the contemporaries were united at the intersection of fashion and the arts.
Cunard was an intellectual who moved with conviction against the status quo, advocating for racial and social justice in 1920s and 30s Paris. Man Ray, a later collaborator of Jeanne Lanvin, photographed Cunard in 1926 with bangles shockingly stacked up both arms – famous accessories said to have inspired sculptor Constantin Brancusi. As founder of her own modernist publisher, The Hours Press, Cunard championed Samuel Beckett, then an emerging talent.
Cunard’s wardrobe, mixing masculine tailoring and bohemian style, holds an energy of how we dress today. Lanvin inflects these codes with a youthful vigour in menswear and womenswear collections featuring a daytime wardrobe centered around sharp tailoring and elegant sportswear and evening proposals from embellished cocktail to the charmeuse gowns and grain de poudre tuxedos for which the maison is universally known.
Accessories, like the ready-to-wear, build upon recent seasons in channeling a discreet refinement across a range of categories including an expanding leather goods offer, formal shoes with a focus on the iconic ballerina, costume jewelry, and sneakers – with best-selling styles and new innovations fueling the development of a product category that Lanvin has uniquely cornered in the luxury marketplace.
Jeanne Lanvin, Nancy Cunard, the individuals and clients around the world who inhabit the universe of a storied maison pitched emphatically forward – their nature is to give substance to style, to insist on nothing less.
